Safely installing solar panels with SolarEdge
The built-in safety technology from SolarEdge exceeds current international safety standards. In this article, we will tell you more about this technology, which allows you to minimise risks during installation and maximise safety when installing solar modules.
The need for precautionary measures
A typical PV system can reach voltages up to 1500 V DC. That's why it is important to ensure the safety of a PV system by taking precautions during installation. After all, you want to be at work with a sense of security and offer the maximum safety to your customers. By combining protection and detection features, the SolarEdge system ensures safe energy production, reduces the risks of electrocution and ensures fire safety. These safety features are also better known as Sense Connect and SafeDCTM.
Prevent electric arcs with Sense Connect
The Sense Connect technology was launched last year, making it the latest addition to SolarEdge’s range of safety features. This technology performs continuous monitoring for any overheating (which can occur due to installation problems or attrition) of the connector. Automatic inverter shutdown occurs when an abnormal connector temperature is detected. Real-time alerts are sent for quick identification and resolution of the problem.
Precautions for optimal safety
SolarEdge inverters are equipped with the SafeDCTM technology that increases safety. The SafeDCTM technology ensures that in case of problems, such as overheating or a loose contact, the voltage is reduced to 1 volt per solar panel, with a maximum of 50 volts. This is significantly lower than with a string inverter, where the voltage remains high on the roof. By using SafeDCTM, SolarEdge minimises the risks of electrocution and damage to the equipment. It also maximises the fire safety of the installation. Therefore, this can be a good reason to choose inverters from SolarEdge.
Integrated security approach exceeds global security standards
In late 2022, the Dutch organisation for Applied Natural Science research (TNO) conducted research on the safety approach of SolarEdge's AFCI (Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter), arc detection, Sense Connect and SafeDCTM. This research shows that innovation and safety can work together, which is an important step in the development of safety standards in the solar industry.
“SolarEdge exceeds global safety standards in the solar industry with its integrated safety approach.”
- Nico Dekker (TNO)
Key conclusions from this study are:
In all cases when an arc occurred in the test setup, the power of the string was switched off within the requirements of the UL1699B standard.
The Sense Connect functionality switched off the power during testing and helped prevent conditions that may cause fire.
SolarEdge: safety at its best
In short, SolarEdge is transforming the solar industry with their DC-optimised inverter solution. This enables maximum energy production with guaranteed safety.
